Before magazines could publish photos in their pages, companies hired illustrators to help move them off the shelf. The notable illustrator for women’s magazines of the 1910s was Charles Gibson – you can see his amazing work above.

He portrayed well-to-do women in tight corsets, creating an hourglass figure and extremely straight posture.
